Spirit AeroSystems’ April layoff brings total for year to 140
Spirit AeroSystems laid off 30 workers in Wichita last week, bringing its total layoffs for 2016 to 140, or 1.2 percent of its workforce.
According to information posted this week on the state’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification notice registry, the layoff occurred on April 4.
This latest action brings total layoffs at the company in 2016 to 140 people, or 1.2 percent of its 11,000 Wichita employees.
“We are constantly reviewing our staffing needs and making workforce adjustments to meet customer demand and improve our competitive position for the future, including measured hiring as well as some reductions,” Spirit said in an e-mail to The Eagle on Thursday.
It also said it is experiencing production decreases on some of its programs and increases on others. Spirit builds major parts of all Boeing airplanes in Wichita. Boeing is slowing production this year of the 747-8 but has increased the production rate of the 787.
“The company will continue to hire for specific skillsets and currently has a need for 100 employees in a variety of skills including engineering, finance and management,” the e-mail said.
