‘Doc’ nears start of inspection for airworthiness certificate (+video)

The Federal Aviation Administration could begin its airworthiness certification inspection of the B-29 Bomber known as Doc as early as next week, according to an update Friday afternoon from the group restoring the World War II-era airplane.

In a post on the Doc’s Friends website, the nonprofit group that owns and is restoring the Wichita-built Boeing bomber said “volunteers have been putting the final touches on the restored B-29’s systems and making final adjustments ahead of the FAA review and inspection.”

“The next step will be a physical inspection of the aircraft by the FAA, followed by an inspection during engine runs,” the post said. “Weather permitting, those tests and inspections could happen in the next week to 10 days.”

The group will need an FAA airworthiness certificate before they can attempt a first flight of the B-29.
