More work for Spirit prompts GKN to invest in Wellington
GKN Aerospace will invest $9 million mostly at its Advanced Machine Structures plant in Wellington.
The United Kingdom-based company said in a news release the investment comes after it received additional work and a contract extension from Wichita-based Spirit AeroSystems.
The new investment will be used for new, high-speed machinery to support its work for Spirit. It employs about 250 people at its 245,000-square-foot plant at 429 N. West in Wellington, 35 miles south of Wichita.
“We are privileged to continue this in the future and are striving for more,” Mike Grunza, CEO of GKN Aerostructures North America, said in the release.
GKN Aerospace said it has been a long-term supplier of titanium parts for Spirit for Boeing’s 737, 777 and 787 jetliners. Last year it signed an initial contract extension with Spirit for titanium parts, and an agreement to supply passenger cabin windows for the 737.
