Spirit AeroSystems to hold job fair on Saturday

Spirit AeroSystems has job openings for 125 sheet metal assembly mechanics in Wichita, the company said.

To that end, it will hold a job fair from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at its center at 3420 S. Oliver.

“With attrition, we’re always going to need a certain level (of mechanics),” said Spirit spokesman Jarrod Bartlett. “Then you throw in continued rising rates on our major programs, and it really accelerates the issue for us.”

Work at the facility has been growing as Boeing increases production on its popular 737 single-aisle jetliner to meet record orders. In February, it increased production to a record 42 per month with a goal of reaching 47 per month in 2017.

Since 2010, 737 production has increased 33 percent. Spirit builds the 737’s fuselage, nacelles and pylons.

Spirit has some other openings in the factory. For example it is looking for painters, crane operators and others, he said. But primarily Spirit is seeking mechanics.

Those interested in the jobs should apply online at makeitfly.aero before coming out to the job fair, Bartlett said.

They also may bring a resume with them to the fair.

Six months experience is preferred, Bartlett said.

Pay for the positions will be based on experience.
