Shipping giant FedEx will use a new Boeing 777 Freighter as Boeing’s next ecoDemonstrator airplane, Boeing announced Thursday.

Beginning next year, the 777F manufactured for FedEx will test new technologies aimed at improving safety and environmental performance. It will be the fifth airplane to be used in Boeing’s ecoDemonstrator program.

The three-month-long test program will include installation of a Boeing-developed compact thrust reverser intended to save fuel; improvements to the airplane’s flight deck to improve efficiency while operating at busy airports; and flying prototype airplane parts manufactured in new ways to reduce material waste.

Following the testing period, the 777F will be returned to FedEx’s fleet.

Spirit AeroSystems in Wichita manufactures the 777’s forward fuselage and other structures.
