Kansas wind power on track to increase 20 percent

The state of Kansas currently has 600 megawatts of wind farm electrical-generation capacity under construction, according to the American Wind Energy Association.

When that is completed, it would mark a 20 percent increase from the end of 2013. The total energy produced by Kansas wind farms would supply the equivalent of a million homes, according to the association.

Much of the growth has been driven by a federal production tax credit, which expired at the end of 2013. AWEA officials said in a conference call Tuesday that they will push to renew the tax credit during the lame duck session of Congress – between now and when newly elected Congress takes over in January. Most conservatives have opposed the tax credit.
