Construction of SE Kansas casino delayed because of legal dispute
The Kansas Lottery has granted a 90-day extension to the Kansas Crossing casino group for it to start work on a casino in southeast Kansas.
In July, after a months-long competition, the commission awarded the Kansas Crossing group the license to build and manage a $70 million casino in Crawford County, near Pittsburg. Subsequently, a competing county, the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners, and a competing casino group, Castle Rock Casino & Resort, filed suit to overturn the bid award.
On Aug. 17, according to a letter by Lottery executive director Terry Presta, Kansas Crossing asked for the extension on when it is required to start in order to gain legal clarity on whether its bid-award would be upheld.
Presta said in a letter that after 90 days, he wants a clear idea of the status of the legal dispute and that Kansas Crossing could seek more delays if litigation is still pending.
