The Ford Mustang Mach-E May Be Left Behind By Ford's Next EV Push

Not Invited To The Future?

The Ford Mustang Mach-E has undeniably done wonders for the Blue Oval, even outselling the gas-powered Mustang in previous years. Given its importance to the lineup, it would seem natural for the company to keep investing in its development. However, a report from Ford Authority states that the Mach-E will not be underpinned by the next-generation Universal EV Platform.

For context, Ford's upcoming Universal EV Platform is touted as a way to reduce production costs and support multiple body styles, a formula that could improve profitability as the company continues to struggle with making money from EVs. That reality has already affected models like the all-electric F-150 Lightning, which was discontinued late last year.

The Mustang Mach-E arrived at a time when the market was more favorable to EVs. But now that automakers are being forced to find more profitable solutions, the model's absence from the new platform suggests it may not be a major priority.

Reading Between The Lines

Ford stated, "No, it will not be used for the Mustang Mach-E. This platform was built from a clean sheet to maximize efficiency."

That would be a notable shift, considering the Mustang Mach-E has helped keep Ford competitive in the EV market for years against rivals such as the Tesla Model Y and Hyundai Ioniq 5. The automaker does offer other EVs, including the all-electric Explorer and Puma Gen-E, but neither is currently available in the U.S. market.

The Mustang Mach-E still rides on the GE1 platform, which has been in production since the 2021 model year. At this point, it seems about time for a major overhaul, but there are no imminent reports of one. A redesign was reportedly pushed back to the end of the decade, but given how unpredictable the EV market has become, expectations may need to be kept in check, especially now that the model will not use the automaker's next-gen EV platform.

Ford's Next Big Bet

What is known for now is that the Universal EV Platform will underpin Ford's new all-electric midsize pickup, which is expected to carry a starting price of around $30,000. That would essentially make it one of the most affordable EVs in the U.S., behind Slate Auto's bare-bones EV pickup, which could start in the mid-$20,000 range.

The Mustang Mach-E currently starts at around $37,000, meaning Ford's upcoming $30,000 electric truck and possible future models on the Universal EV Platform could attract some of the same buyers. As things stand, unless the automaker allocates more resources to keeping the Mustang Mach-E competitive, the model could start to feel outdated in the coming years.
