Seven Kansas communities awarded airport project funding
The Kansas Department of Transportation on Friday announced that seven additional airports have been selected for 2016 safety-enhancement projects around the state, according to a news release.
Phase II Kansas Airport Improvement Program projects in Fort Scott, Hugoton, Independence, Minneapolis, Moline, Quinter and Rose Hill will receive funding totaling about $3.8 million from the state, with almost $2 million scheduled to go toward construction of a new airport in Quinter, the community’s first-ever airport.
Earlier this year, 21 projects were announced as part of the program’s first phase. The state reserves $5 million annually for the program, which is guided by the transportation department’s Division of Aviation. The division received 118 applications for projects for 2016, according to the release.
“The airports that were chosen are dedicated to preserving and improving their airport infrastructure,” said Kansas Transportation Secretary Mike King. “They will better serve their local community and the state of Kansas.”
Project sponsors are required to pay a minimum of 5 percent of the cost of projects and can be required to pay as much as 50 percent.
