Smith Family Mortuaries acquires former Watson property

Smith Family Mortuaries has acquired the former Watson Funeral Home and Cemetery at 31st South and Webb.

The Derby-based family owned mortuary said in a news release it will rename the business Reflection Pointe Funeral and Cremation Services. The cemetery will retain its Reflection Pointe Cemetery name.

Included in the acquisition was a 4,600-square-foot funeral home with seating for 175 people, and a crematory. The cemetery sits on seven acres.

Smith Family Mortuaries, which operates six locations in and around Wichita, did not disclose financial terms of the property acquisition.

“We have city locations and suburban locations, and now a peaceful rural location for those families that desire that type of setting,” said Justin Smith, president of Smith Family Mortuaries, in the release.

The funeral home’s owner, Douglas Watson, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in October 2014 to 30 months in prison and ordered to pay $306,500 in restitution, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office. Watson had earlier pleaded guilty to four counts of money laundering.
