C&B acquires Lenexa firm to broaden products, geography

A Wichita industrial equipment distribution firm has acquired a similar company in Lenexa.

C&B Equipment of Wichita, 3717 N. Ridgwood, said Thursday it has acquired Steel Toe Group, a distributor of municipal pumps and mechanical seals.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Dennis Noyse, C&B’s owner and chief executive, said the acquisition will grow his company’s business.

The business of Steel Toe matches well with the pumps, compressors, blowers and engines that C&B sells, Noyse said. Steel Toe’s business includes distribution of a new wastewater pumping system called Direct InLine Pump System that is widely used in Europe but is just beginning to be used in the U.S. and Kansas, Noyes said.

He said C&B has been permitted by a couple of manufacturers of the pumps it distributes to expand that business into the Kansas City area.

“It’s an excellent opportunity to grow that business,” Noyes said.

Steel Toe’s five employees will be retained in the acquisition, as will its facility at 9900 Pflumm in Lenexa. But that facility will be re-branded with the C&B name. Noyse said he also expects to hire a couple of more employees at the Lenexa office.

Noyse said C&B was previously operating in Wichita as an office of a Kansas City-based firm. The company, Cullum & Brown, opened the Wichita office in 1975. Noyse was hired to run the Wichita office in 2000 and in the fall of 2010, he bought the office and renamed it C&B.

The company employs 20 people in Wichita. Its primary business is the sale of pumps and manufacturing of pump systems for ethanol refineries as well as the oil, meat packing and aircraft industries. It also distributes industrial compressors and blowers, Noyse said.
