Featured business person: Debbie Williams

Williams thinks she can make a healthy place even healthier in her new job.

“Our goal is to develop a culture of wellness in the community,” she said. “It can be anything from encouraging businesses to have health food policies, to making sure the City Council stays on track with developing a culture of health within the environment. Derby has great walking and biking paths. We just hope to continue that momentum in the community.”

A graduate of Bethany College, Williams has lived in Wichita for 30 years. She was previously health promotion program manager for the Sedgwick County Health Department, heading a staff of six that worked on tobacco control, oral health and other issues. Before that she ran the Health and Wellness Coalition of Wichita.

She started her new job last month. She will work with the Derby Health Coalition, a group that encourages workplace wellness programs.

Williams and her husband, Randy, have four grown children and one grandchild.

“Everybody is very much into health and fitness and takes care of themselves,” she said of her family.

Her sport of choice is golf. “I'm about a bogey golfer. Some days a little better.”
