Wesley Medical Center plans to renovate its obstetrics unit, a $3 million project that will include work on patient and labor rooms, the reception area and heating and cooling systems.

Work on Wesley BirthCare Center follows a $36 million renovation of the hospital’s women center. Wesley also recently announced plans for a dedicated children’s hospital.

The BirthCare Center renovations will take place in three phases, according to a news release. That will allow hospital officials to close up to eight of the 20 patient beds at a time. The project will be completed in spring of 2016.

Between the birth center and its main campus, Wesley delivers more than 6,000 babies each year, more than any hospital in a 13-state region, according to the release
