BNSF Railway plans capital investment program in Kansas

BNSF Railway said this week it estimates it will spend $103 million in Kansas this year to improve and expand its operations.

The Fort Worth, Texas-based railroad said in a news release that part of its capital investment in Kansas will go toward the surfacing and undercutting of 1,284 miles of track, replacing nearly 33 miles of rail and about 94,500 ties, and upgrading signals for federally mandated positive train control.

The money also will be used to construct 11 miles of double track between Bonita and Hillsdale — in Johnson and Miami counties — along its Fort Scott subdivision, and expand its yard track at the Logistics Park Kansas City Intermodal Facility in Edgerton.

BNSF said the capital investment in Kansas is part of its $6 billion capital expenditure program announced last November.
