Obstacle course to teach kids bicycle, pedestrian safety

Kohl’s Safety Town – an interactive obstacle course to teach pedestrian and bicycle safety to kids – will be at Exploration Place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, according to a news release.

The course – which includes storefronts, mini cars, stoplights and sidewalks – is designed for children over the age of 3. Volunteers from Sedgwick County EMS will be on hand to help teach the rules of the road, according to the release.

There will also be a 9-1-1 call simulator to teach kids about how and when to call.

To participate, children should bring their bicycles and helmets. There will also be a giveaway of about 100 helmets for those who need one.

The free event is being held at the same time as Smallgrass, a children’s film program at Exploration Place. For ticket information, visit www.exploration.org/smallgrass.

The Kohl’s Safety Town program is offered by Via Christi Health and Kohl’s Department Stores through a recent $65,000 grant. The course will travel to events and venues throughout the community this year.
