Featured business person: Don Farquhar
Farquhar retired from one full-time job to take up another.
The golf pro at Rolling Hills Country Club since 1998, Farquhar stepped down Jan. 1. This week, he started working full time at GolfTEC, which he opened in 2012 with Rich Maril.
Farquhar, 58, grew up near Detroit and attended Ferris State University, attracted by its professional golf management program. He worked as an assistant golf pro in Bartlesville, Okla., for eight years before taking the Rolling Hills job.
He was also Rolling Hills’ director of operations for the past decade. That left him less time for teaching golf, which is “kind of why I got into golf in the first place. My love of teaching is kind of driving me to GolfTEC.”
GolfTEC is a Colorado-based operation with about 170 franchises in North America and Asia. It uses high-tech gear to analyze customers’ swings and also sells custom-fit clubs.
Farquhar plans to continue coaching the women’s golf team at Newman University. He and his wife, Linda, have two grown daughters. He said he hasn’t had much time for many interests outside work through the years, including his own golf game.
“I’m hoping with this change, I’ll be able to play a little more.”
