Area farmers close to closing out year with bigger harvests

Area farmers are close to finishing with their crops for the year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

As of the weekend, the harvesting of corn in south-central Kansas was 98 percent complete, while the soybean harvest was about 80 percent finished, and the grain sorghum harvest was more than 70 percent done.

Total corn production in south-central Kansas is projected to be up 17 percent over last year, while the soybean production for the area is projected to be up 14 percent.

The USDA said about 90 percent of the winter wheat crop in south-central Kansas had been planted as of the weekend.
