Police: Stranger attacks, rapes woman, 56, in her home

A woman reported being awakened and raped by a stranger Sunday morning in her south Wichita home, police said.

The assault occurred shortly before 4:30 a.m. Sunday at a house southeast of Lincoln and I-135, a police document stated. The 56-year-old woman told police the man indicated he had a gun, though she never saw one.

The suspect forced her onto her back and then raped her, she told police. She thinks the suspect entered and exited her house through a back door.

Lt. Randy Reynolds, head of the sex crime unit, would not say whether the door was forced open or left unlocked. Rapes in which the victim does not know her attacker account for less than 10 percent of all rapes in Wichita, police statistics show.
