Coldest air yet of the season to give Wichita the shivers

Break out the sweaters and winter coats, Wichita: The coldest air yet of the season is knocking on the door.

A cold front that moved through the metropolitan area early Monday afternoon was expected to plunge overnight temperatures into the low 20s and keep Tuesday’s highs in the 30s.

“It’s definitely going to be a really cold day,” said Scott Smith, a meteorologist for the Wichita branch of the National Weather Service.

North winds will add to the shudder factor, gusting to more than 25 mph at times. There won’t be any snow, though.

“There’s just not enough moisture across Kansas” to deliver snow, said Justin Pullin, a meteorologist with AccuWeather’s Wichita office.

But the cold air won’t go away quickly. Highs will be only in the 40s on Wednesday, and a gradual warmup will see temperatures reach the 50s by Friday. Wichita could see 60s again by Sunday – just in time for another cold front to arrive.
