Man killed in crash on 119th Street identified

The man killed after his car ran into a tree Wednesday morning in west Wichita has been identified as Drew Hopson, 52, of Wichita.

Lt. Joe Schroeder said Thursday that Hopson had a medical condition that caused him to lose consciousness behind the wheel. There was no sign of alcohol or reckless driving, Schroeder said.

The accident happened at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday when authorities think Hopson was on his way to work. He lost control of his Suzuki SUV, veered across traffic and ran head-on into a tree near 119th Street between Maple and Kellogg.

Hopson was wearing his seatbelt, but the collision was so severe, he was killed on impact, police said.
