Area properties nominated for historic register

Four local properties have been nominated for the National Register of Historic Places.

The Wichita nominations include the Naomi and Leona Apartment Buildings at 509 and 507 S. Market, and the Ellington Apartment Building at 514 S. Main.

The Naomi and Leona apartments were built in 1926 and 1927 by developer Oliver J. Mourning. The developer named the Leona apartments after his daughter; the Naomi apartments for his mother. Both were built in the neoclassical style.

The Ellington Apartment building was built by Wichita developer John Wenzel in 1927, also in the neoclassical design.

In Butler County, the Creed-Mills House at 219 N. Maple in Douglas was nominated. The house was built in 1894 by Melissa and Henry Creed in the Folk Victorian Style.

The nominations were made by the Historic Sites Board of Review. The state board’s recommendations automatically become listings on the Register of Historic Kansas Places.

The national listings must be approved by a national board, and that could take another six to nine months. Listing makes a building eligible for state historic trust grants and federal funds to pay for repairs.
