Wichita Transit to purchase 10 new buses
Wichita Transit is continuing its upgrade of the city’s bus fleet, with plans to purchase 10 more new buses.
The $3.94 million purchase will go before the Wichita City Council on Tuesday. It is part of a broader local plan to upgrade the fleet with the purchase of up to 75 buses over a 10-year period. The buses are slated for delivery in May 2014.
According to city documents, the 10 buses will be paid for with $3.27 million in federal funding and a local match of almost $700,000, the latter funded with general obligation bonds as part of the city’s 2014 capital improvements program.
The buses are being acquired at a discount from the Gillig Corporation, city documents indicate, by “piggybacking” off an existing 2013 bus contract between the company and the state of Minnesota.
