City receiving calls about tree damage

The city of Wichita received about 50 calls Wednesday morning about minor damage caused by trees in its right-of-way from the ice storm, said David McGuire, superintendent of park maintenance and forestry.

McGuire said that anyone who has an emergency from a tree planted in a city right-of-way – such as between the curb and the sidewalk – should call 316-268-4361.

“It hasn’t been real significant yet,” McGuire said. Minor damage to a few cars has been reported, “that kind of thing,” he said. “As long as we don’t get another wave, we’ll be OK.”

McGuire said that older trees are showing most of the damage.

The city is still removing trees that died from last summer’s heat and drought, and as spring unfolds, “we’ll probably see a more significant amount of trees that never made it over the winter,” McGuire said. An ice storm doesn’t help the cause, he said.
