The Kansas Star Casino opened a five-table poker room Wednesday after receiving final approval from the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission.

The room is non-smoking and will be open 24 hours a day if the demand warrants.

It features Texas Hold 'Em and Omaha poker as well as a Bad Beat Jackpot, a progressive jackpot that increases daily. The jackpot started at $4,000.

The casino hadn’t planned to open a poker room until its permanent facility was completed in January 2013, but customer demand pushed the project forward, said Mike Dickson, director of casino operations.

The Kansas Star’s permanent casino will open with additional gaming, a hotel and more dining options. The final phase, scheduled to open in 2014, will include an equestrian center, shows and concerts. The Kansas Star will expand the poker room to 12 tables in its permanent facility.
