West Wichita carjacking leads to extended chase, deadly gunfire
A carjacking in west Wichita shortly after noon triggered an extended pursuit through western Sedgwick County that ultimately ended in officers fatally shooting a man near Cheney Reservoir.
After leading officers from several law enforcement agencies on a chase, the man exchanged gunfire with officers and was killed just after 1 p.m., Reno County Sheriff Randy Henderson said Monday afternoon.
Sedgwick County emergency dispatch said a 60-year-old man had been pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident began when the man stole a Nissan sedan from Maggie’s Retail Liquor, 2510 W. Douglas, near Meridian, at 12:19 p.m. Monday, a Sedgwick County dispatch supervisor said. The man drove west and was spotted by a Goddard police officer at Maple and 183rd West.
Several law enforcement agencies were involved in the pursuit, which continued into Reno County.
“There is a shooting,” Sedgwick County sheriff’s Lt. Randy Cole said.
The man got out of his car in the 3800 block of West Parallel Road, and fired a gun at officers, who returned fire, killing him, Henderson said.
No law enforcement officers were injured.
The Reno County sheriff, Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Sedgwick County Forensic Science Center are investigating, Henderson said.
