Former Shocker Andy Dirks called up to the majors

The Detroit Tigers called up former Wichita State outfielder Andy Dirks on Friday afternoon.

The Tigers put Magglio Ordonez on the 15-day disabled list with an ankle injury, clearing a spot for Dirks.

Dirks hit .328 with six home runs and six doubles in 34 games for Triple-A Toledo. He scored 25 runs and stole 10 bases.

Dirks, who attended Haven High, played two seasons at WSU after transferring from Hutchinson Community College. In 2008, he hit .388 with 11 home runs and 26 stolen bases for the Shockers, helping them to a super regional. He was named All-Missouri Valley Conference and a third-team All-America by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

He is the fourth current Shocker in the majors, joining the Cubs' Koyie Hill, the Dodgers' Casey Blake and the Mets' Mike Pelfrey.
