Man charged in Osage County triple homicide

OSAGE COUNTY — State authorities said today that a 46-year-old man from Missouri has been charged with capital murder in the deaths of his estranged wife and two daughters over the weekend.

Attorney General Steve Six said James Kraig Kahler, of Columbia, Mo., has been charged in the slayings of Karen Kahler, 44, and their daughters, Emily, 18, and Lauren, 16.

James Kahler also is charged with attempted first-degree murder of Dorothy Wight, 89, and aggravated burglary of Wight's home. Wight is Karen Kahler's grandmother.

Officials said the crimes occurred in Burlingame at about 6 p.m. Saturday. A former city official, James Kahler lost his job after he was charged with assaulting his wife.

Kahler appeared in court today in Lyndon, the county seat in Osage County. The Death Penalty Defense Unit was assigned as defense in the case.

Bond was set at $10 million, cash only. A preliminary hearing is set for Dec. 10.
