Girl Scouts to close 2 camps, including one in Overland Park
TOPEKA | New construction and low turnout is leading the Girl Scouts of NE Kansas and NW Missouri to close two of its camps.
The organization has voted to close Camp Timberlake in Overland Park and Camp Woodland in Albany, Mo.
Spokeswoman Gina Garvin says the council decided to shutter Camp Timberlake because of the property's listing as part of a flood plain, a new sewer line built across the property and road construction that has taken away some space. The Missouri camp is closing because of low attendance, its distance from large cities and its proximity to another camp.
Three Girl Scout councils merged to create the new organization two years ago. The organization is now sifting through the many properties to figure which ones it can keep.
