JEFFERSON CITY | The Amtrak passenger trains running from St. Louis to Kansas City are being renamed the Missouri River Runner.
The Missouri Department of Transportation announced the new name Wednesday for the state-supported trains. The winning bid was submitted by Keith Kohler of Glendale and received 37 percent of the 5,455 votes.
Transportation officials say the name comes from the Missouri River, which parallels much of the route. The four other finalists were: Missouri Rail Blazer, ShowMeMO, Truman Service and River Cities Corridor.
The Transportation Department and Amtrak sponsored the contest last year to highlight 30 years of state-supported passenger train service.
