Royal Caribbean cancels Oasis-class ship's port stop over technical issue

Cruise vacationers who spent thousands of dollars for a Memorial Day week cruise on one of Royal Caribbean's largest and most popular ships are not getting the sailing they expected. After departing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida on May 24, passengers were notified that the 5,700-passenger ship was operating at a reduced speed due to a problem with one of the ship's propulsion systems.

Although the issue didn't prevent the ship from sailing, it meant that the cruise wouldn't be able to keep its planned itinerary. Passengers booked a six-night cruise to The Bahamas and Western Caribbean, but it turned out that they'd only get to visit The Bahamas on the adjusted sailing.

Luckily, there's a lot to do on board an Oasis-class cruise ship because the altered itinerary is likely to cause more passengers to spend at least one of their planned port days on board. Instead of visiting a Western Caribbean destination that many vacationers look forward to exploring, passengers will spend two days in the same Bahamas port.

As the ship's crew works to address the issue with the propulsion system, sailing at a reduced speed and keeping the ship close to Florida in The Bahamas will ensure that it's able to return to Fort Lauderdale on schedule on May 30. It's unclear at this time whether the propulsion problem will impact the ship's next sailing.

Doug Parker shared more details on the Oasis-class ship's propulsion issue and resulting itinerary changes, and more cruise news, on the May 27 edition of Cruise News Today.

Cruise News Today Transcript:

Cruise News Today with Doug Parker.

Good morning, here's your cruise news for Wednesday, May 27th.

Skipping a stop because of issues. Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas has canceled a scheduled stop in Jamaica after experiencing a propulsion issue during its current Caribbean cruise.

The line says one of the ship's propulsion systems is experiencing a technical problem, forcing the vessel to operate at a reduced speed. As a result, guests will now spend an extra day in Nassau, Bahamas instead of visiting Falmouth, Jamaica. Sounds fun.

Royal Caribbean says it's automatically refunding guests onboard credit ranging from $100 to $200 depending on the category of stateroom. The ship is still expected to return to Port Everglades on schedule at the end of its current sailing.

Storylines shares update on long-delayed residential cruise ship project

And the residential cruise company Storylines says it has secured access to a $500 million bank guarantee as the company works to revive plans for its long-delayed live-on cruise ship, the MV Narrative.

Now, the project was first announced back in 2018 and was supposed to launch this year, but construction never began. In an update to prospective residents, the company said it is nearing the end of a restructuring process working to secure additional funding and addressing delayed customer refunds. Storyline says it also is working with a second shipyard as a backup option.

The latest update comes after years of delays that have many investors questioning whether the project will ever set sail. The project remains one of the industry's longest-running coming soon announcements.
