Vigils in Wichita welcome all faiths for prayers about national, local issues

An unforgettable 2020 will steer topics of prayer during several All Faiths Prayer Vigils in Wichita.

There are three more opportunities for people of all faiths to come together for an hour and pray for local and national government, economic recovery, the COVID-19 crisis and unity. Organizers ask that attendees bring a mask and lawn chair and practice social distancing.

“We felt that we’re all upset about what is going on ... and we thought a positive way to turn a negative is to go and pray,” said event chair Margarita LaFarelle-Hunt.

The prayer opportunities are on Saturdays on the following dates:

  • Sept. 26: 11 a.m.-noon at the Kansas Firefighters Museum, 1300 S. Broadway (park west of the museum)
  • Oct. 10: 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the south side of the Douglas Avenue bridge, 130 S. Waco (park at Century II)
  • Oct. 24: 11 a.m.-noon at the flagpole at North High School, 1437 N. Rochester (park at North High School parking lot)

LaFarelle-Hunt said police and fire chaplains as well as pastors of different faiths will speak during the events. Wichita fire chief Elizabeth Snow will be one of the speakers on Sept. 26.

Event sponsors include Church Women United, Multicultural Education & Celebration Association, Global Faith In Action, La Familia Senior Community Center, Building Bridges E-Letter, Breakthrough Club, Wichita USD 259 and several other groups of Christian and other faiths.
