Food & Drink

Dalgona Coffee has become a social media sensation. Here’s how you can make it at home.

Does anyone else feel like a professional dishwasher at this point? Same. I clean up my breakfast, lunch, Randy’s lunch — which somehow doesn’t match up with mine — and then dinner dishes. The dishwasher and I are getting quite the workout. Perhaps my arms will be tank top-ready post-quarantine. And in case you’re wondering, I did successfully kick the brownie habit mentioned last week.

This week’s recipe is for the social-media-made-famous drink called Dalgona Coffee. You might wonder what in the world this weird named coffee is, and a few weeks ago I wondered the same thing. It’s a frothy butterscotch-colored coffee foam that tops the milk of your choice, and it’s a beautiful, aesthetically pleasing coffee drink. When you see it, you won’t believe that you can accomplish it without a barista.

But Dalgona Coffee is very simple. Since you have extra time now that there’s no morning commute, perhaps it’ll become a quarantine coffee must. Hopefully you have all of the items to make it in your pantry/fridge already, so you can whip one up: instant coffee, sugar and milk.

Dalgona Coffee became a sensation a couple of months ago in South Korea when actor Jung Il-woo tried it for a television show called “Stars’ Top Recipe at Fun-Staurant.” The actor said the coffee foam reminded him of “a South Korean honeycomb toffee confection called dalgona.” After the show went live, the phenomenon started and went viral.

If you want to watch videos of how to make it, simply Google “Dalgona Coffee video,” and many YouTube and TikTok videos will pop up. The foamy, velvety coffee goodness will leave you drooling on your paper or keyboard. Admittedly before this social distancing started, I thought the TikTok app was just for kids, but I’ve seen several entertaining videos of adult friends dancing and singing on social media. I’m in favor of whatever it takes to get us to laugh, smile and be entertained right now. And to stay caffeinated. Laughter and caffeine will get us through.

Dalgona Coffee

2 tablespoons granulated instant coffee

½ - 2 tablespoons sugar

2 tablespoons hot water

6 – 12 ounces milk or milk substitute, iced or hot

To make one drink, combine 2 tablespoons granulated instant coffee, ½ tablespoon sugar (or more, if desired) and 2 tablespoons hot water in a medium bowl.

Whip by hand with a whisk or hand mixer. Continue mixing until the mixture turns to foamy to frothy to creamy.

Spoon the fluffy mixture over milk in a glass filled with ice (or warmed milk). Combine and serve.
