Screen Scene: Film fest hit ‘The Lobster’ leads best bets in theaters this week
Best bets opening Friday
▪ “The Lobster” – This certainly looks like one of the more original premises of the year, about a futuristic society where people are required to find a romantic partner or be turned into an animal (Colin Farrell stars as a man who chooses to be a lobster if he doesn’t fall in love – no pressure there!).
▪ “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” – Andy Samberg stars as a pop star (loosely based on Justin Bieber, it seems) who goes into crisis mode after his new album flops. Reviews so far have been surprisingly positive.
Also opening Friday
▪ “Me Before You” – Kleenex alert! This adaptation of Jojo Moyes’ romance novel promises to be a weeper, about a small-town woman who falls in love with a paraplegic she is caring for. Emilia Clarke (HBO’s “Game of Thrones”) and Sam Claflin (“The Hunger Games”) are the impossibly attractive leads.
▪ “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” – The hard-shelled superheroes return, this time to battle a new nemesis known as Krang.
Special screening
▪ “Overboard” – The Orpheum Theatre’s 2016 film series has the theme “Love & War,” and kicking things off is this 1987 comedy starring Goldie Hawn as a spoiled wealthy woman who falls off a luxury yacht and gets amnesia. A working-class carpenter (Kurt Russell) she wronged convinces her that she’s his wife. Showing at 7 p.m. Monday at the Orpheum, 200 N. Broadway. Tickets are $5, $4 for students/seniors/military.
