BEST BETS: “Brooklyn” is a strong Oscar contender, particularly for star Saoirse Ronan, who plays an Irish immigrant who comes of age in 1950s Brooklyn. While it at first seemed like just another lame sequel, “Creed” is getting surprisingly strong notices and cheers for Sylvester Stallone’s performance as his beloved Rocky. Bryan Cranston is said to be a delight in “Trumbo” as a screenwriter who is blacklisted in 1947 Hollywood.

FOR THE KIDS: Word on Pixar’s second release this year, “The Good Dinosaur,” is that it isn’t the studio’s best but should still please the kiddies.

STEER CLEAR: “Victor Frankenstein” seems to be DOA.
