Movies to get into the mood for Halloween
Mainstream releases in area theaters
▪ “Crimson Peak” – Guillermo del Toro’s ghostly thriller follows a woman (Mia Wasikowska) who marries into a mysterious family and moves into their creepy mansion. No red flags there at all.
▪ “Goosebumps” – Jack Black stars in the live-action take on the kiddie books about a teenager who teams up with the daughter of horror author R.L. Stine after the writer’s imaginary demons come to life and are accidentally set free.
▪ “Hotel Transylvania 2” – This animated sequel has Dracula opening his spooky hotel to human guests.
▪ “The Last Witch Hunter” – Not sure how scary this is, but it does have witches. Lots of them. Hey, Vin Diesel may be the last witch hunter, but no one said he was any good at it.
▪ “Pan” – OK, OK, it’s not scary, but this new take on the Peter Pan myth did get ghastly reviews.
▪ “Paranormal Activity: Ghost Dimension” – More ghosts captured with more shaky cameras.
▪ “Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse” – Three scouts on the eve of their last camp-out attempt to save their town from a zombie outbreak. That’s a new meaning to scout’s honor!
Special screenings
▪ “An American Werewolf in London” – This 1981 cult classic is about college students abroad who get attacked by werewolves, and it boasts Oscar-winning makeup effects. Showing at 9 and 11:20 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Palace, 535 S. Ridge Road Circle. Tickets are $3.50.
▪ “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” – Let’s do the Time Warp again! It never gets old. Neither does this campy musical about a newly engaged couple who get stranded and stumble into the bizarre world of Dr. Frank-N-Furter. Showing at midnight Friday at the Orpheum Theatre, 200 N. Broadway. Tickets are $10. Participation kits are $5 (no outside props are allowed). Doors open at 10:30 p.m., and keep in mind that the film is rated R. You must be 17 to get in (or be accompanied by an adult).
