Screen Scene: ‘Ant-Man,’ ‘Amy’ new in area theaters
New this week
▪ “Ant-Man” – Marvel’s tiniest hero hits the big screen, starring Paul Rudd as a con man armed with a suit that causes him to shrink in size but increase in strength, as he helps his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), plan and pull off a heist that will save the world. It’s good to have goals.
▪ “Amy” – This documentary and film festival hit follows the rise and fall of British singer Amy Winehouse. I suspect this will be a frontrunner for a best documentary Oscar.
▪ “Mr. Holmes” – Always regal Ian McKellan stars as an aged, retired Sherlock Holmes who looks back on his life and grapples with the unsolved case that forced him into retirement.
▪ “Trainwreck” – Comedy Central fixture Amy Schumer is said to shine in her first big-screen leading role as a no-nonsense career woman who doesn’t believe in monogamy until she meets an actual nice guy (Bill Hader).
Summer of Spielberg film series
▪ “Jaws” – It’s shark week at the Orpheum! The 1975 classic actioner turns the big 4-0 this year and is hailed as the film that set the course for Hollywood summer blockbusters. It’s set in the small tourist town of Amity, where a shark attack throws the community into chaos, prompting a police chief (Roy Scheider), a marine scientist (Richard Dreyfuss) and a grizzled fisherman (Robert Shaw) to hunt the shark down. Showing at 7 p.m. Monday at the Orpheum. Tickets are $5; $4 for students, seniors and military.
