Best bets opening Friday

▪  “Call Me By Your Name” – Timothee Chalamet and Armie Hammer star as two young men falling in love in the northern Italian countryside in 1983.

▪  “I, Tonya” – The dark comic story of figure skater Tonya Harding, her scheming husband, hard-driving mother and the infamous attack on rival Nancy Kerrigan. With Margot Robbie, Sebastian Stan, Allison Janney.

▪  “Phantom Thread” – Director Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest is set in 1950s London, where a famous fashion designer (Daniel Day-Lewis) has his finely tuned lifestyle disrupted when he falls in love with a young, strong-willed woman.

▪  “The Shape of Water” – The discovery of a secret otherworldly experiment changes the life of a lonely government employee in 1962. With Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins.

Also opening Friday

▪  “12 Strong” – Chris Hemsworth and Michael Shannon star in this tale based on the heroic true story of Green Berets riding horses into the impossible Afghanistan terrain directly after 9/11 to take down the Taliban.

▪  “Forever My Girl” – A bratty country star (Alex Roe) returns to his small Southern home town and reunites with his high school sweetheart (Jessica Rothe), who tells him he is the father of her child. Oops!

▪  “Den of Thieves” – An elite unit from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department squares off against a crew of thieves who plan a seemingly impossible heist – the city’s Federal Reserve Bank. It’s good to have goals.

Special screening

▪  “Equal Means Equal” – This documentary explores gender inequality in America featuring women’s rights activists and leaders. Director Kamala Lopez exposes how outdated and discriminatory attitudes influence workplace matters to domestic violence, rape, sexual assault and more. The screening is held in partnership with the Women’s March on Air Capital and KMUW. It will be shown at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at the Orpheum Theatre, 200 N. Broadway. Tickets are $8.
