Screen Scene for week of Aug. 11: ‘Star Trek’ reboot wraps up Fantastic Summer series (+trailers)
Special screenings
▪ “Star Trek” – Beam me up! Closing out the Orpheum’s Fantastic Summer film series is the 2009 reboot that stars Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock. Showing at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14, at the Orpheum Theatre, 200 N. Broadway. Tickets are $5, $4 students/seniors/military.
▪ “Raising Arizona” – The Orpheum’s Classic Film Series presents this 1987 comedy from Joel and Ethan Coen, starring Nicolas Cage and Holly Hunter as an ex-con and ex-cop who meet, marry and kidnap a baby when they discover they can’t have one of their own. This has got to be one of the most quotable movies ever (“Son, you got a panty on your head”). Showing at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, at the Orpheum. Tickets are $5, $4 students/seniors/military.
Best bet opening Friday in theaters
▪ “The Glass Castle” – The best-selling memoir by Jeannette Wallis gets the movie treatment, about a young girl who comes of age in a dysfunctional nomadic family with an eccentric artist mother and an alcoholic father. Woody Harrelson, Naomi Watts and Oscar winner Brie Larson star.
Also opening Friday
▪ “Annabelle: Creation” – “The Conjuring” horror series continues with this prequel to “Annabelle,” which itself was a prequel to “The Conjuring” (how far backward are they going to go?).
▪ “The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature” – Purely for the kiddies is this animated sequel to the 2014 comedy.
