Warren Theatre announces new lineup of ‘sensory sensitive’ movies

The Warren Theatre in west Wichita will continue its “sensory sensitive” movie showings for children with autism and other special needs through at least the rest of the year.

Bob Nooe, a counselor at Greiffenstein Alternative Elementary School in Wichita, announced the new lineup of movie dates and times Tuesday. The theater near 21st and Tyler has added several movie dates since the schedule was last published.

Unless otherwise noted, shows are on Saturdays at 11:30 a.m. at the west Warren Theatre, 9150 W. 21st St. Normal ticket prices apply.

Here is the schedule:

▪ July 9: “The Secret Life of Pets”

▪ Aug. 6: “Ice Age: Collision Course”

▪ Aug. 13: “Pete’s Dragon”

▪ Sept. 10: “The Wild Life”

▪ Sept. 24: “Storks”

▪ Oct. 1: “Miss Perigrine’s Home for Peculiar Children”

▪ Nov. 5: “Trolls”

▪ Nov. 26: “Moana”

▪ Dec. 23 (Friday): “Sing”

For children with certain forms of autism or sensory disorders, theaters can be scary places. The dark environment and ear-splitting audio, combined with policies that require moviegoers to stay seated and quiet, can make movie outings impossible for them and their families.

During the sensory sensitive screenings, which began in 2012, theater officials turn the house lights up a little more than usual and turn the sound down. Movies are shown in auditoriums with sloped aisles rather than stairs, so audience members can move around, talk, dance or sing.
