At the end of a splashy, two-hour finale Tuesday, the champion's trophy was handed to Alfonso Ribeiro.
"I cannot believe this. I've wanted it forever," Ribeiro said. "These are happy tears."
He had performed through injuries to be declared champ. Dance partner Witney Carson praised him as a hard worker who deserved the prize.
Sadie Robertson of "Duck Dynasty" placed second, and "Pretty Little Liars" actress Janel Parrish was third. Robertson said the show was an amazing experience and that Ribeiro deserved to win.
The three remaining celebrities had to perform a fusion dance in the final round. All three routines earned perfect scores from judges.
Robertson's samba-quickstep had judge Len Goodman raving that she had the Cinderella story this season.
Parrish's fiery yet elegant foxtrot-paso doble prompted Bruno Tonioli to say Parrish and partner Val Chmerkovskiy were amazing together.
Ribeiro's cha cha-Argentine tango wowed Carrie Ann Inaba, who called him a glitterball. Tonioli said he was a legend. Ribeiro revealed that he would go out on the "Dancing" tour.
The dance contest will celebrate its 10th anniversary in the spring. The show wrapped up the current season by bringing back ejected contestants to dance again. Jennifer Hudson, Nick Jonas and Meghan Trainor performed.
