February kicks off with alternative film events in Wichita

There are lots of special screenings in Wichita in February. Here’s a look (titles and times are subject to change):

“South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut” (1999) – In this feature film based on the hit animated series, the third-graders of South Park sneak into an R-rated film by ultra-vulgar Canadian television personalities and emerge with expanded vocabularies that leave their parents and teachers scandalized. Presented with Broadway in Wichita. 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7. $12 plus taxes and fees.

Spektrum Muzik presents: “Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains” (1982) – A teenage punk rocker retreats far into plans for her band, the Fabulous Stains, after her mother’s death. 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8. $12 plus taxes and fees.

“Knitflix & Chill: Legally Blonde” (2001) – This special event features a knitting group from 5 to 7:30, where Harvester Arts will have yarn and crocheting supplies, and wine available. The film is about fashionable sorority queen Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon), who follows her ex-boyfriend to law school, where she discovers that there is more to her than just looks. 7 p.m. February 13. $15 plus taxes and fees.

Madame Mae presents: “My Bloody Valentine” (1981) – A decades-old folk tale surrounding a deranged murderer killing those who celebrate Valentine’s Day turns out to be true when a group defies the killer’s order and people start turning up dead. 7 p.m. Feb. 14. $18 plus taxes and fees.

The Record Ship presents: “S/He Is Still Her/e - The Official Genesis P-Orridge Documentary” (2024) – This showcases an introduction, conversation and goodbye to Genesis P-Orridge, who left a legacy in the worlds of music, performance, art, religion and the occult. Rescheduled from Jan. 5. 4 p.m. Feb. 16. $8 plus taxes and fees.

Gate Record Store presents: “Crash” (1996) – After getting into a serious car accident, a TV director discovers an underground sub-culture of scarred, omnisexual car-crash victims, and he begins to use car accidents and the raw sexual energy they produce to try to rejuvenate his sex life with his wife. 7 p.m. Feb. 22. $12 plus taxes and fees.

Harmons and Hollywood presents: “Pillow Talk” (1959) – An interior decorator and a playboy songwriter share a telephone party line and size each other up. Starring Rock Hudson, Doris Day and Tony Randall. 4 p.m. Feb 23. $8 plus taxes and fees.

Madame Mae presents: “Blade” (1998) – A half-vampire, half-mortal man (Wesley Snipes) becomes a protector of the mortal race, while slaying evil vampires. 7 p.m. Feb 28. $15 plus taxes and fees.

ORPHEUM THEATRE

“More Like Jackie” – This documentary follows the theft of a bronze statue of famed baseball player and civil rights pioneer Jackie Robinson on Jan. 25, 2024, from League 42, a nonprofit baseball league for youth in Wichita. The theft shocked the local community and made news nationwide. In the following months, support poured in from around the world to replace the missing statue. The film will have its theatrical debut with current and past members of League 42 in attendance. The film’s creators from The Wichita Eagle and Kansas.com will also be present, along with some members of the cast for questions following the film. Showing at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8. Tickets are $10.

“Snooze” – DrewVision Cinema presents the official premiere of this romantic comedy about a young woman named Steely looking for love in the dating space. She suffers from a sleeping disorder that causes her to fall asleep when she’s bored, so she falls asleep on all of her dates. This was made in Wichita with a local cast and crew. 7 p.m. Feb. 14. Tickets are $25. Must be age 13 or older to attend. A special VIP dinner at 5 p.m. precedes the screening at the Hudson Venue, 508 S. Commerce. Cost is $35 per plate at snoozedinner.simpletix.com.

Anniversary Film Series: “All About Eve” (1950) – A seemingly timid but secretly ruthless ingénue insinuates herself into the lives of an aging Broadway star and her circle of theater friends. Starring Bette Davis, Anne Baxter and George Sanders. 7 p.m., Feb. 20. $8, $7 students, seniors and military.
