Tallgrass Film Festival in full swing
The festival, which started Wednesday, continues through Sunday with screenings, panels, parties and much more. Here are 10 films that will have a filmmaker or guest attending for a Q&A after the screenings:
“A Is for Alex” – Shot throughout the nine months before their child was born, husband-and-wife team Katie and Alex Orr create a modern look at becoming a parent. 11:15 a.m. Saturday at Scottish Rite, 332 E. First. Writer-director Alex Orr attending.
“Before I Disappear” – A depressed, irresponsible man gets a call from his estranged sister asking him to look after her daughter for a few hours. 7 p.m. Sunday at Orpheum Theatre, 200 N. Broadway. Editor Andrew Napier attending.
“The David Dance” – The host of a local gay radio show in Buffalo, N.Y., struggles with self-doubt when his sister asks him to be the father figure for her adopted child. Noon Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday at Garvey Center, 250 W. Douglas. Producer-writer-star Don Scime attending.
“Half Brother” – A man returns home after breaking up with his girlfriend to discover his parents are getting a divorce. 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Orpheum Theatre. Director Anthony Grippa attending.

“The Life and Mind of Mark DeFriest” – A legendary escape artist comes up for parole after 30 years behind bars. 1:15 p.m. Friday at the Orpheum and noon Saturday at Garvey Center. Producer Charlie Sadoff attending.
“A Life in Dirty Movies” – A documentary about legendary sexploitation director Joe Sarno. 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Garvey Center and 1:45 p.m. Sunday at Bank of America Theater, 100 N. Broadway. Subject Peggy Steffans Sarno attending.
“The Living” – A man awakens after a drunken night to discover that he has severely beaten his wife. 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Scottish Rite. Director Jack Bryan, producers John Snyder and Laura DuBois attending.
“Silenced” – Oscar nominee James Spione’s look at political whistleblowers. 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Bank of America Theater and 11 a.m. Sunday at Scottish Rite. Director James Spione attending.
“Yojimbo” – Akira Kurosawa’s classic is about a ronin who comes to a town divided by two criminal gangs and decides to play them against each other. This is showing as part of the “Return of the Reels” gala. 7:30 p.m Friday at Orpheum. Film historian and Kurosawa scholar Stehphen Prince attending.
