Augusta to celebrate theater’s anniversary with ‘Back to the Future’ marathon
Augusta will change its name Friday to Hill Valley for the day in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the movie “Back to the Future,” according to a news release from the city.
Mayor Matt Childers and the City Council voted to put the temporary name change in effect. The movie will be featured that evening at the Augusta Theatre, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary. Hill Valley was the fictional setting for the “Back to the Future” movies.
“Basically this event is just to make people aware of downtown and what we have to offer,” said Lisa Jeter, executive director for Downtown Augusta Inc. “We have the beautiful theater that’s celebrating its 80th anniversary, and with the movie’s 30th anniversary, it’s just something fun for everyone to do.”
The event will begin with a parade at 5 p.m. and there will be a cookout. Starting at 6:30 p.m., the theater will play all three “Back to the Future” movies. There will also be a Marty McFly look-alike contest, and a DeLorean car will be available for pictures. Michael J. Fox plays Marty McFly in all three movies.
Admission to see all three movies is $8, and there is a discounted price of $15 for four tickets.
