State Fair Food: Cap’n Crunch Corn Dog
Cap’n Crunch Corn Dog
Where to find it: Family foods, just north of the intersection of Pride of Kansas Avenue and Bison Boulevard
What it costs: $5
What’s in it: A hot dog on a stick, fried in batter laced with ground-up Cap’n Crunch breakfast cereal
The judgment: The batter is very sweet, and it’s moderately sticky. It largely overpowers the inherent saltiness of the underlying hot dog. I found myself wondering: "Should I put mustard on this or pour milk over it?"
The overall taste could be improved by fine-tuning the proportion of Cap’n Crunch to hot dog. The hot dog is quite large, so you get your $5 worth, and unless you’re a big eater, you can consider it more as lunch than a snack. As experimental fair foods go, I’d rate this about middle-of-the-pack. Unlike some fair concoctions, it’s not an inherently flawed flavor combination. But it also wasn’t a combination that makes you jump up and say, “Wow, I wonder why nobody ever thought of this before!”
Advice: If you like sweet and think your regular corn dog is too bland, you might want to give this a try.
