Big G’s Burgers, Century II Food Court

The infamous doughnut cheeseburger.

I have read about this seemingly nasty fair food for years, but I’ve never quite had the intestinal fortitude to try one for myself.

But, for The Eagle, I am willing to put my well-being on the line.

The first time I tried to purchase a doughnut bacon cheeseburger on Friday, Big G’s was out of doughnuts. Sad day.

On Saturday, I had much better luck.

The doughnut bacon cheeseburger itself is somewhat small and manageable – it isn’t much bigger than the palm of your hand. One glazed doughnut is sliced in half, with a burger patty, cheese and bacon thrown in between the halves.

I was pleasantly surprised, though I wouldn’t recommend eating it more than once.

The most analogous food I could compare it to is a bacon and egg McGriddle from McDonald’s – the doughnut adds sweetness, much as the syrup in the McGriddle does, but the saltiness and meatiness of the burger somehow work in harmony with that.

I ate it with gusto, not pausing to snarf down any of the wet, soggy fries before the burger was all gone.

The fries, as I’ve alluded to, are unimpressive but palatable. Make sure you have a napkin handy, though, as they leave your hands very greasy.

Overall, I would recommend this burger much more than Big G’s top-billed “monster burger,” which was more expensive and much more boring on the tastebuds.

3 out of 4 stars.
