It’s only cinco days until Cinco de Mayo, the annual excuse to eat tacos and gulp margaritas.
On Thursday, local restaurants and bars will offer food and drink specials and several patio parties.
Here’s a guide to some of the places celebrating Cinco de Mayo in Wichita this year. Check with you favorite Mexican restaurant about its plans.
Abuelo’s, 452 S. Ridge Road and 1413 N. Waterfront Parkway: The restaurant will have drink specials all day Thursday including $3.25 drat beers and Mexican flag margaritas for $6.95.
Carlos O’Kelly’s, several Wichita locations: Now through Thursday, this locally based Mexican chain is offering queso for $1.05, $5 jumbo margaritas (which drop to $3 on Thursday) plus $2.50 Mexican bottles of beer and half-price kid meals. Also, anyone who has a five in their birth date, month or year will get a card good for five free servings of queso over the next five weeks. On Thursday only, the restaurant is offering its annual El Guapo Challenge: Anyone who eats five enchiladas and one El Guapo taco in 10 minutes gets the meal for free and gets a commemorative T-shirt.
Casa Martinez: 204 W Greenway, Derby, 316-788-7333: The restaurant will offer all-you-can-eat tacos for $7.95 plus $3 margaritas and $2 beer bottles on Thursday.
Felipe’s, 2241 N. Woodlawn, 316-652-0027: This Felipe’s will once again put on its big Cinco de Mayo party on Thursday, which spills out onto its patio and will include music and giveaways. It starts at 11 a.m. and runs till about 10 or 11 p.m. The restaurant will not close during the afternoon like usually does. The party will include drink specials, including $5 margaritas, and street tacos also will be on special.
Felipe’s Jr., 9718 E Harry, 316-684-8931: From 11 to 2 p.m. and 5 to close on Thursday, the restaurant will offer a long list of drink specials and offer several Cinco de Mayo giveaways.
Jose Peppers, 11423 E. 13th St., 316-260-6404, and 2243 N. Tyler, 316-613-2333: The Tyler location will have Annie Up playing on the patio from 6 to 9 p.m., plus $7 margaritas. The 13th Street restaurant will have a DJ on the patio plus $7 margaritas.
Magoos, 2304 S. Oliver St., 316-612-9600: This bar will celebrate Cinco de Mayo from Thursday through Sunday with $4 margaritas, $13 buckets of Mexican beer and $2 shots.
Molino’s, 1064 N. Waco and 7817 E. 37th St. North: Both locations of this Mexican restaurant will have drink specials, including $5 margaritas, as well as food specials. The east-side location will have a DJ on the patio from 5 to 8 p.m.
On the Border: The On the Border at 1930 N. Rock Road will celebrate with $3 margarita, Dos Equis and Corona. A mariachi band will perform starting at 4 p.m. The west-side On the Border at 2347 N. Maize Road also will have drink specials and will have a balloon artist on site from 6 to 9 p.m.
