Smarts Doughnut has found a new location, and it looks like it’s about ready to open.

A Smarts Donut sign is on the door at the former Lizzie’s Delights Catering space at 3238 E. Douglas. That’s just a few doors east of Traditions Furniture Store.

Tables and chairs and a display case can be seen inside. The interior looks complete and ready to go. A few weeks ago, I stopped in the business to inquire about what was going in, but the people on site wouldn’t say. Owner Brian Helmer has not returned phone calls.

Smarts Donut has been trying to open in Wichita since March 2015. Owners originally planned to go in the former Cero’s space at 1108 E. Douglas. Before they could open, they were sued by Hurts Donut owners Tim and Kas Clegg, who said that Helmer, his manager Evan Spicer and partner Gloria Medrano had stolen their business plan after originally talking with them about opening a Hurts franchise Wichita.

Smarts later counter-sued the Cleggs, saying that Kas Clegg defamed Smarts owners by making false statements about them to The Wichita Eagle and by disparaging their name with potential vendors. After the counter-suit was filed, Smarts’ lawyer said they were looking for a new location for their store.

Hurts opened its first Wichita store in July at 7010 W. 21st St. Hurts local franchisees recently announced plans to open soon near 37th and Woodlawn and also plan to open stores in south Wichita and in Hutchinson later this year.

If I find out any more about Smarts’ opening, I’ll let you know.
