New Wichita food truck serves no food – just local craft beer

A new Wichita food truck that will have its debut on Saturday doesn’t sell food at all. Its commodity is even hotter than that.

Nitro Joe’s owner Dan McDonald and Justin Bjork have teamed with Xclusive Event Services to start the Drink Local Truck, which will vend local craft beers in addition to Nitro Joe’s signature nitrogen cold-brewed coffee and tea. Its first outing will be at the Workroom’s annniversary party on Saturday.

Xclusive, owned by McDonald’s wife Crystal McDonald and her brother, Cody Lathrop, has been regularly bringing its mobile bar to food truck events and will continue to do so.

The owners are using an old gutted food truck that Dan McDonald bought long ago, hoping to someday find a use for it. It had been sitting in the back yard with no engine, not even a driver’s seat.

“We Frankenstein-ed an engine and a transmission, got wheels and tires and new electrical,” Bjork said. “We did literally everything to it but paint it.”

The truck, which Bjork and McDonald expect to be working on right up until Saturday, will have 10 beer taps fitted into the side hooked up to refrigerated kegs on the inside. On Saturday, they’ll be serving two Wichita Brewing Company beers, one Walnut River beer and one Hopping Gnome beer. Central Standard Brewing also has agreed to work with the truck, but its owners are working on replenishing their beer supply.

They plan to frequently park the truck at the ICT Pop Up Urban Park and the soon-to-open Wichita State University food truck plaza, where they’ll sell just coffee and tea.

At special events, like food truck rallies and meetups, they’ll add the beer. They’re also planning to serve local craft beer at April 24’s monthly Food Trucks at the Fountain event.

The Drink Local Truck will have its own Facebook page soon, Bjork said, as soon as the truck is finished enough for good photographs.

The Workroom’s anniversary party is set for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday at 150 N. Cleveland, and it also will include 18 food trucks, seven bands and local artists selling their wares.
