It took Tina McDonald a lot longer than she expected to get her new bar open, and she wonders if the broken mirrors are to blame.
McDonald, who will open Tina’s Tavern on Wednesday morning in the former Stadium Sports Bar space at 620 W. Maple, redid the interior and added an elaborate touch – a bar covered with pieces of broken mirrors that it took her weeks to affix, epoxy and smooth down.
“I took quite a few great big, humungous mirrors and broke them,” she said with a laugh. “That’s probably why it’s taken me so long to open.”
The shiny new bar is just one change at the bar, which former owner Lori Fry closed in November after nine years in business as Stadium Sports Bar.

McDonald also completely redid the floors, adding her logo in a prominent spot. She took down a wall to expose a space the former owners used for storage and added pool tables and lots of square footage. But when she had the bar inspected, McDonald learned that she needed a permit to take down the wall and use the space. She’s had to put the wall back up while she applies for the proper permits.
“I cried like a little girl,” she said. “I started bawling. But I have learned a lot.”
She still plans to open the extra space once she gets her permits in order.
McDonald will serve simple food items like nachos, pizzas and sandwiches. She also plans to bring back some jalapeno pretzel bites that once were popular menu items at The Stadium.
The bar will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily. McDonald said a few of the bar’s former regulars have already told her they’ll be there when the doors open on Wednesday.
