Wow Cheesesteaks has an opening date, and it’s less than two weeks away.
Tyler Sanders says he will open his new cheesesteak restaurant on April 8. It’s in the former Yolo Grill space at 803 N. West St. He’ll likely put on an official grand opening event later.
Originally, Sanders had said he’d open in the fall, and I’ve been getting e-mails and Facebook messages for months from people wanting to know when it would be ready.
Sanders said he wanted to take his time and make sure everything was just right. He’s spent the last several months sampling products, and it hasn’t always been easy to get the things he wants to make his sandwiches authentic. Sanders, who used to live in Philadelphia, said he wants just the right Italian rolls, just the right meat and the perfect Provolone cheese.

Potential customers drop by daily wondering when he’ll open, Sanders said.
“There’s a lot of interest there, and that’s another reason I’m taking my time,” he said. “I want to make sure it’s right.”
His building is a former Sonic, he said, so most people assume he has no dining room. But there’s actually room for 26 seats inside, and he plans to use them. Sandwiches also will be available for carryout, and he also will sell steak sandwiches, which are cheesesteaks without the cheese, Italian hoagies, waffle fries and a few salads.
Hours will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. For more information, call 316-491-1239 or visit the shop’s Facebook page.
